Getting Dental Implants in London and Tips for Your Post-Surgery Care

12 / 03 / 2015

Dental implantology has completely changed the entire dentistry landscape. Many individuals in the U.K. who suffer from lost teeth, problems with dental function, and other teeth-related discomforts benefit greatly from dental implants in London. Getting the procedure done is the first step to gaining better oral health; however, what happens after the procedure is a different matter you will need to pay attention to. This is because post-surgery care also plays a role in your recovery as well as your dental health.

Don’t Risk It

After the procedure, your dentist will give you specific and important instructions on how to care for your London dental implant for a speedy recovery. It is important that you follow these instructions to the letter or risk getting complications like infections, pain, swelling, bleeding and other serious problems. You will be provided with the necessary medications and other items that will help you in your recovery. There are some things, however, that you will have to be responsible for yourself.

Come Back for Check-Ups

To ensure that you don’t develop any of the aforementioned complications, you need to visit your dentist for routine check-ups. This gives your dentist the opportunity to assess the overall health of your teeth after the procedure. Your dentist might need to require you to get x-rays to check on your bone structure and if the dental implant is completely secure. If the screws have come loose, he or she will re-tighten them.

Watch What You Put In Your Mouth

Immediately after your dental implant surgery, especially if anesthesia was used, you need to just take it one bite at a time. You’ll also do well to avoid hot beverages and foods until after the feeling of numbness subsides. After that, you may only eat food that will not put too much pressure on your new tooth for at least two to four weeks. Stick to eating only soft, easy to digest and nutritious food. Avoid anything spicy, food with high acid content, and other unhealthy habits like smoking and consuming alcohol.

Look After Your Dental Hygiene

Most importantly, you need to do keep your mouth clean and healthy to limit the possibility of developing infection. A routine brushing and flossing is completely necessary but you should do your best to avoid the area where the implant is attached so you don’t irritate it. For good measure, gargle with a mouthful of mouthwash at least twice a day to avoid any germ buildup in your mouth.
