So let’s get down to it- oral hygiene, get it spot on- find the right brush, find the right toothpaste and floss regularly and your teeth will feel better for it. Now it doesn’t stop here; think about what you eat, what you smoke and what you drink on a regular basis and try to at least give your mouth a chance to breathe and be healthy. From a vanity point of view as well, it is always essential to project yourself by keeping your teeth looking as well they can and here, we arrive at the person who is going to save you and help you in all your endeavors and who will be the person to give you the consummate back-up you need, your chum the dentist. They can sort out any problems you may well be going through, they can repair you and send you on your way with all the knowledge you need to have to sustain a healthy mouth, but it is down to you when the sun sets and you are on your own, so take the advice wisely, learn how to care for your mouth and your teeth will care for you in return.

Medical stories often make the headlines in the modern world and as such people are increasingly concerned with maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Having healthy teeth and gums is a vital part of your bodily health and many people are now returning to the dentist, having neglected to go for a while. This is because your local dentist is the best person to see if you want to find out about the information concerning oral hygiene and how to achieve the finest standards of it.

The best place to start is with tooth brushing. This should be carried out at least twice a day, usually in the morning and again in the evening. But it is important that tooth brushing is done correctly to get the maximum effects. You should make sure that you are replacing your brush (or the head if you use an electric tooth brush) every six months or so, or when the bristles have become frayed.

Make sure that you are brushing all areas of your mouth, including the sides of your teeth which are facing into your mouth. Use fluoride tooth paste so that the fluoride can help strengthen your protective enamel, the mouth’s vital, natural defence against plaque.

But don’t forget to floss as well. This often neglected part of the oral hygiene routine is just as important to carry out because your brush won’t be able to remove all of the plaque from teeth and has particular problems with doing so when it comes to plaque that is in between teeth.

Your local South East London dentist is not only there for the purposes of treatment and examination, he or she will be delighted to have a chat with you about your oral hygiene routine.

In fact, it’s because of these products and better awareness of using them, that some dentists are advocating just one check-up a year to some of their patients. But of course this doesn’t work for all of us, which is why we should take control of making regular appointments at the dentist. Against all our best efforts to keep our mouths clean, we only need to take our eye off our teeth for 12 hours for bacteria to grow, plaque to set in, followed by tooth decay and gum disease. Visiting your dentist regularly can help combat these problems. Only by an x-ray can early signs of tooth decay be identified and resolved with a simple filling. Your dentist can also clean your teeth of any plaque or tartar by giving you a scale and polish. But you can also take advantage of other things at a dental check-up. You can discuss any problems you may have had since your last visit and discuss any treatments you may need to have in the future; also, it’s a great time to talk about any cosmetic treatments you are considering. By keeping close contact with your dentist, combined with your own hygiene at home, there is every chance that your teeth should be with you for life.

Look around any shops in London SE1 and you’ll be bombarded with an incredible range of products all designed to keep your mouth healthy, and they all do a very good job too. In general, it’s a very simple equation- brush, floss and rinse at least twice a day and you should be okay. But all of us have individual needs when it comes to oral hygiene and all our mouths are different. So if you have any doubts about what products are right for you, a chat with your dentist should help point you in the right direction. Don’t forget, they’ve seen, and know your mouth, as well as you do, but it’s essentially down to you to look after yourself. The most important element is to get the right brush and toothpaste; this can be very hit or miss at first, but if you persevere, and get this right, you’ve won half the battle of oral hygiene. Then you can back it up with flossing and mouthwashes. But there are also other elements that factor in oral hygiene. It’s all designed to keep your mouth free of bacteria that grows out of food that gets lodged in the teeth, so most people prefer to clean their teeth after eating. But it’s also what you eat that’s important too. If you maintain a balanced diet and do everything in moderation, your teeth will remain healthy as well and react better with your oral hygiene program. Remember, things can spiral out of control very quickly in your mouth, but if you keep your mouth clean, you will limit the amount of treatment you’ll need at the dentists

Dentists can offer great advice on how to combat it and one of these pieces of advice will probably be to tighten up your home oral hygiene routine. By taking extra care to brush and floss you are removing the bacteria in your mouth which causes bad breath. Strangely though, some of the products you might use to take care of your mouth can actually make the problem of bad breath worse.

The thing about some products is that they can make your mouth drier, which allows the bad breath bacteria to stick to your gums, teeth, tongue and the inside of your cheeks. If you suffer from bad breath and are using tooth paste which contains peroxide or baking soda, these ingredients might be making your mouth dry which means it is harder to remove the bacteria which is making your breath smell.

Products containing alcohol can often have the same effect: by keeping your mouth drier, the bacteria are harder to remove. A number of mouthwashes contain alcohol and it is imperative that if you use of these products that you rinse your mouth thoroughly with water afterwards. If you don’t then the alcohol will hang around in your mouth, keeping conditions dry and ideal for bacteria to flourish.

Be gentle with your mouth too as the bacteria causing bad breath thrives in conditions where the enamel on your teeth is starting to break down and cavities are forming. You may want to use a tooth brush with softer bristles or review the way you are brushing and do it with less force. Speak to your South East London dentist for more expert advice.

The perfect example of this is use of braces or aligners to remedy orthodontic problems in the mouth such as crooked and buck teeth and Invisalign treatment in London’s S.E.1 epitomises the example. It’s a fairly new course of treatment that radically revolutionises the time and look taken by more traditional teeth straightening treatments. When you choose Invisalign, you choose the latest technology. When you get your first consultation, you will be shown images of a projected movement to your teeth thanks to the use of 3-D imaging and then fitted with your first aligner. This will be changed monthly to maintain pressure on the teeth. But Invisalign has other advantages over more traditional braces. Firstly it’s transparent and difficult to detect in the mouth- heaven if you’re a teenager trying to avoid teasing in class. Secondly, it can be removed for eating, oral hygiene and socialising, and thirdly, Invisalign treatment can be completed in a third of the time, that other fixed aligners take. It’s not the cheapest way to get your teeth fixed, but, psychologically, one of the best.

But there’s a good chance that the same people will not be discussing the benefits of good oral hygiene down the pub; if only. Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the easiest of procedures, yet the most overlooked. How hard can it be? Brush and floss twice a day and a bi-annual check up, and oral health should start at the dentists. There are a lot of products on the market, but a dentist will be able to give advice on the best course of hygiene for you. It starts with the type of brush and paste you use and how you use them. The use of dental floss and mouthwashes are all simple yet affective means to promote a good, healthy mouth. But it’s not only about the products, its lifestyle too. It’s all about understanding ourselves and knowing what we put in our mouths. Diet is very important, as is everything in moderation such as smoking and drinking. Essentially if we play hard, we should clean harder, for in the long run, the price of putting things right can be devastating.

Ask most people in the south-east of London what their list of priorities are in day to day life and it’s pretty certain that getting a dental check-up isn’t one of them. In fact, for some people, it’s pretty much one to avoid unless in an emergency. It’s quite incredible how ignorant we can be when it comes to the importance of oral hygiene. But in cold reality, it should be high on our list of priorities for health reasons. Complications can arise quickly in the mouth and if left untreated, can lead to complex and expensive treatments in the future. A simple visit to the dentist can nip these problems in the bud. It’s a chance for your dentist to carry out extensive checks for a series of nasties such as

gum disease, plaque and decay and subsequently treat you to prevent further issues developing. Yet, most of us will see a check up as something we have to do, when in fact it’s the perfect opportunity to discuss a range of issues that affect us. Are we using the right brush and toothpaste and brushing correctly? It’s a great chance to talk about lifestyle habits such as diet, smoking and drinking and any notions of cosmetic dentistry that we may have been thinking about. It’s very easy to take the need of a check-up lightly, but before you do, it may be worth considering the deeper implications to ‘ducking’ a simple dental appointment. Problems in the mouth can affect the rest of the body and can lead to heart, digestion and blood problems. Maybe you should put it higher up the list of priorities now?

Xerostomia, also known as dry mouth, is the condition where an underproduction of saliva, the mouth’s natural defence against bacteria, causes an imbalance with unpleasant consequences. Not only is xerostomia an unpleasant feeling but it is also the cause of bad breath and can lead to an increased chance of many other dental and oral conditions.

Saliva not only moistens the mouth but it also neutralises bacteria and washes away food particles stuck in the teeth. There are a number of reasons that can adversely affect the production of saliva such as medication you may be taking for other conditions, radiotherapy and also because of a general dehydration. We have all experienced that feeling of having a really dry mouth when we are thirsty and xerostimia is just a chronic case of that feeling. Not very pleasant, I’m sure you’ll agree.

A lack of saliva also puts you at much greater risk of gum disease. This is particularly dangerous given the recent discovery that gum disease is linked to heart disease and potentially fatal heart attacks. This is because the infection can easily get into the bloodstream and block the arteries.

London SE1 dentists recommend that should be suffering from dry mouth, or suspect that you are, you need to make an appointment to have the condition checked and examined for possible causes. The longer the condition remains untreated, the greater risk it poses for your oral health. Try to improve your oral hygiene to compensate, drink plenty of water and avoid eating foods with a high salt content. But most importantly, never ignore the problem in the top that it might go away.

The best way to healthier teeth is through a simple, but disciplined program of brushing, flossing and rinsing. Flossing is the best thing you can do, but we don’t do it often enough and that’s a shame as it is the best way to keep down the production of oral acid. Yes, we do floss in the morning and at night, but it is during the day when we don’t floss that acid is produced in huge amounts. The times that mostly damage our teeth are during the day and at night, when we sleep and eat fast food, it is then that saliva is not produced and acid cannot be neutralised. That`s why our breath smells so badly in the morning. We need saliva to swallow, and to neutralise acid build up that is produced by oral bacteria. In the daytime we eat snacks and fast foods, it’s a sign of the busy times we live in, and that is good news for the bacteria, but bad news for our breath, gums and teeth. Drinking water during the day, and at nigh, will go a long way to neutralising acid that damages your gums and teeth; it is also good for taking toxins out of the body on a regular basis. Brushing also needs some attention to detail as most of us brush the wrong way, ask at your local dentists or chemists for information on brushing correctly.
