You only get one set of natural teeth in your life time so it is best to take care of them as best you can. To this end, a mouth guard might be required in certain circumstances if you are participating in some activities and past-times. Cracking or chipping a tooth because it has been subject to an unforeseen impact can be a hassle to sort out and losing a tooth entirely will be even more so. Your South East London dentist can advise you about wearing a mouth guard to protect your mouth.

Mouth guards are commonly worn by those who play rugby, as well as other sports where physical injury is a risk, such as hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse and boxing. Several affordable types of mouth guard can be bought from sports shops but one should bear in mind that these offer the minimum level of protection possible with a mouth guard. If you are going to use one of these types of mouth guard, you should opt for a ‘boil and bite’ protector because these are slightly more tailored to the shape of your mouth.

Far and away the most comprehensive level of protection is given by mouth guards that are specially made by your dentist who will take moulds of your teeth in order to construct the guard. These protectors fit tightly to your teeth and therefore protect them well if an impact to the mouth is sustained. They can also be worn by patients who suffer from bruxism so that they are not wearing away the enamel from their teeth when they grind them together during sleep.

Mouth-guards are designed to protect your mouth from injury, particularly in contact sports, looking after your teeth, gums and tongue from initial injury, but can also limit the shock impact to other areas of the jaw, head and neck. Modern mouth-guards, if looked after, can help you enjoy recreational activities and look after the health of your mouth and body; they can also help to straighten and bleach your teeth. Modern sports, involve a lot of physical contact, hence, mouth-guards have evolved to meet the needs of the modern athlete. Sure you can buy one off the shelf, but the best are custom made with soft gel liners, breathing slots and strong rubber frames designed for high impact, comfortable wearing and easy breathing. Mouth-guards are also custom made for teeth bleaching procedures that lock in the bleaching agent to whiten your teeth overnight, and for straightening your teeth, such as Invisalign, that are clear, flexible and removable. In some cases, fixed brace wearers can also have a mouth-guard made up to cover both the brace and the teeth, for use in sporting activities.

Other uses include teeth bleaching; a mouth guard will contain the bleaching agent and then simply slipped over the teeth until they are whitened. But they are used to prevent injury as well. The city can be a stressful place to live and stress causes one in three people to suffer from bruxism or teeth grinding. If this goes untreated, it can cause serious damage to the mouths occlusion or ‘bite’; a mouth guard is often used in the treatment of this problem as it protects the teeth from wear. But if your of a sporting nature in south east London, chances are you will carry a mouth guard in your kit bag anyway, especially if your fond of contact sports. Just wearing one can save you from very serious injury to the teeth, gums, neck and jaw- and they can also prevent a hefty injury to your bank balance, as it can get quite pricey for repairs to the teeth. For a little lay out, you can buy one that you mould in your mouth yourself, one off the shelf or have one made, and not only do they prevent damage and injury, they lengthen the time you play the sport you enjoy.

If you have ever played or watched a game of rugby you will have noticed that the players all wear mouth guards. This is because in a high-impact game like rugby your teeth are at a great risk of being knocked out during a collision. Protecting your teeth during sporting activity is very important as over half the knocked out or broken teeth seen by dentists occur as the result of sporting injuries that could have been prevented. And it is not just rugby that poses a threat to your teeth. Football, cricket, any form of martial art or boxing can all be dangerous as can any form of motor sport.

It may seem a little extreme to wear a mouth guard when taking part in any sporting activity, but the reality of a knocked out tooth is no laughing matter. Not only will you have the initial pain and sometimes agony of the accident but it doesn’t stop there. Knocked out teeth often need hours of very unpleasant and expensive dental treatment to fix. If left, missing teeth will cause an increase in dental cavities, ruin the appearance of your smile and even cause problems with your profile and facial tissue.

You’re beginning to see why mouth guards are so important. It is possible to buy mouth guards in the high street sports shops, but these are often very ill-fitting and frequently offer little more protection than not wearing one at all. Your South East London dentist will be able to offer you a fully prepared and specially designed mouth guard that will spread the impact of any collision or accident, keeping your teeth safe and your smile intact. For just a few pounds you could save yourself hours of agony and a huge amount of cash on dental replacements.

A dentist in South East London has spoken recently on the subject of Mouth Guards. Most of us associate a mouth guard with boxers, but most other sports can cause damage to the mouth and teeth and a mouth guard is advisable in all sports. They come in 3 types; general gum shields are available at most sporting shops, they are non adjustable and usually uncomfortable making it difficult to focus on your breathing and talking. The next type is called a `Boil and Bite` shield; this type is a lot better and is so called because in order to get a good fit you need to soften it by boiling it, then you use your fingers to push it into shape around the teeth. They are better to wear, you can talk with them and they offer better protection between the teeth and the mouth. The last type is a custom made one; this type is specially made by a technician for the individual and is usually associated with semi or professional sports people. The good news about Mouth Guards is that they can be, and it is recommended that they are, worn over braces to offer better protection. The Mouth Guard should be carefully cared for to keep the strength of the protection; they should be rinsed with cold water before, and after use then kept in a case to avoid squeezing. Using a tooth paste and a tooth brush to clean them is also recommended by the manufacturers. Storage is important as the most common cause of damage is improper storage, any damage such as a tear or a hole should be taken as being a sign that the guard be replaced. Damaged guards can cause more damage to a mouth and teeth than not wearing a guard at all.
