First really seen in the late 1970s and 80s and only then used by the very rich and famous, whitening has quickly become as normal as having a haircut or nail appointment and all because of the stunning results it can achieve.

The secret behind teeth whitening’s success is the subconscious element. Whiter teeth are associated with youth, so the whiter the teeth the younger the patient looks. This also has connotations with health and vitality. We all know people with discoloured teeth, it might even be you, and you know that it can really add years on to your appearance and make the smile dull and unattractive. Teeth whitening uses a bleaching agent called hydrogen peroxide to re-stain the tooth enamel to make it look white and healthy.

One of the most popular brands on the market is Zoom teeth whitening. Offered by most dentists, including your local South East London dentist, Zoom uses the power of a special heat lamp to accelerate the whitening process and make it more effective. Using Zoom it is possible to improve the colour of the enamel by as much as ten shades. You can just imagine the effect this has on the smile and general appearance of the patient.

The other major benefit of teeth whitening is that it s now very affordable. With treatments starting at under a hundred pounds, there is no reason why you too cannot benefit from the incredible power of Zoom teeth whitening from South East London dentist. Make an appointment today to find out more.

Many of us tend to think of veneers as the answer to cover up discoloured teeth, but they have a lot more going for them these days says a South east London dentist. Cracked teeth, a chipped tooth or even a misaligned tooth can all be covered by a veneer. Veneer design and technology has come a long way in the last few years alone, and they are still often the cheapest and most effective method of covering up embarrassing problems. The main types are Porcelain Veneers and Lumineers, with Porcelain Veneers being the ones that we are more familiar with. In order to have them fitted you have to have some enamel taken off the tooth, this amounts to about the same thickness as the veneer and it never grows back. They last from 5 to 15 years and then they are easily replaced with new ones; they discolour around the 10-15 year mark. They are very affective and the tooth can be used in the normal way, it is also kept clean in the usual manner and your usual visits to the dentist are still needed. With Lumineers the story is much different; they are made from a fairly new formula and are much harder wearing than conventional veneers. Because of this they can be made much thinner, the advantage here is that no enamel is taken off the tooth and the procedure is reversible in the future. They also last longer and it is estimated that they will last up to 20 years in most cases.

Or if there was just one single treatment to correct chipped, cracked or unevenly spaced teeth? Well, there is, in the shape of porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells that can be fixed over the top of existing teeth with resin bonding to completely transform the appearance of damaged teeth in only a single afternoon.

Modern porcelain veneers are also so thin that not only do they have the translucent appearance of real tooth enamel but they no longer require the removal of substantial amounts of enamel in order to fit naturally in the dental arc. Modern techniques of manufacturing porcelain veneers utilise the latest digital x-ray and computer technology which has significantly reduced the amount of time needed to fabricate them. This has reduced the number of appointments needed, increased the comfort levels of the patient and reduced the overall treatment time.

Veneers will generally require two or three appointments with the dentist, with the first being an initial consultation to assess suitability. At the next appointment the London SE1 dentist will prepare the teeth for the veneers and then begin to attaché them with the resin bonding. At this stage adjustments can still be made to the size and shape of the veneers before the bonding is set firm using a dental laser.

Depending on how many veneers are being fitted at any one time, it may be possible to completely transform the teeth in only one appointment. When set firm, any excess bonding is removed and the veneers polished and buffed to match the existing teeth creating a stunning new smile.

The logic behind teeth whitening is just as simple as the process. Teeth discolour as we get older due to staining from food and drink, so whiter teeth make the patient look younger and more attractive. The major benefit of teeth whitening is that it can be used on virtually any patient and treatments are available for almost any budget and time allowance. Treatments range form one hour surgery sessions to two-week treatments including take home overnight trays. There is a plethora of different treatments available to suit every different kind of tooth, producing stunning results that can whiten teeth by up to ten shades.

The term whitening, as opposed to bleaching, refers to restoring the natural enamel colour of a tooth by removing dirt and debris. Therefore whitening can never make teeth look whiter than they are naturally supposed to be. This makes whitening a more organic and natural process than bleaching which actually stains white all the staining on the tooth’s surface. This can make teeth look unnaturally white and can even be dangerous if used in high concentration by inexperienced hands. For this reason South east London dentists recommend that all bleaching should be either performed or prepared by a professional, using approved treatment materials.

Both bleaching and whitening vary greatly in price depending on the extent of whitening to be carried out. The effects of teeth whitening can last up to three years before it needs repeating.
