The method is widely used to great effect and is applied by a technician rather than a dentist. It is a purely cosmetic thing though and won’t straighten or repair damaged teeth. It is just a way of whitening teeth that have been discoloured by excessive use of tobacco and red wine, and also usually a lack of regular brushing. It cannot be used on teeth that have diseased gums around them; Gingivitis is a no-no for this method as it exposes the part of the tooth it protects. After an initial consultation the technician will apply a gel to the teeth, and then put a soft shield in your mouth to protect the fleshy parts of it, including the lips and your tongue. Then a light is beamed onto the gel and it reacts to break down and eliminate the discoloured parts. The whole procedure is done in around an hour, and the results are almost instant, the preparation takes about 10 minutes, then the session is broken into three 15 minute parts. It is painless although slightly uncomfortable as your mouth is held open to maximise the light beams effects, you can listen to music or even watch a screen if you wish. It isn’t expensive and can often cost just a couple of hundred pounds, there are restrictions on what you can eat and drink for a while afterwards. If all the advice is strictly adhered to then the client can enjoy a long period of lovely white teeth. It is widely available and some technicians even do home visits, although many people get their Zoom Smile during a lunch break at a salon near their work place.

Wouldn’t it be easy if there was a single quick fix to restore the appearance of badly worn or discoloured teeth? Or if there was just one single treatment to correct chipped, cracked or unevenly spaced teeth? Well, there is, in the shape of porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells that can be fixed over the top of existing teeth with resin bonding to completely transform the appearance of damaged teeth in only a single afternoon.

Modern porcelain veneers are also so thin that not only do they have the translucent appearance of real tooth enamel but they no longer require the removal of substantial amounts of enamel in order to fit naturally in the dental arc. Modern techniques of manufacturing porcelain veneers utilise the latest digital x-ray and computer technology which has significantly reduced the amount of time needed to fabricate them. This has reduced the number of appointments needed, increased the comfort levels of the patient and reduced the overall treatment time.

Veneers will generally require two or three appointments with the dentist, with the first being an initial consultation to assess suitability. At the next appointment the London SE1 dentist will prepare the teeth for the veneers and then begin to attaché them with the resin bonding. At this stage adjustments can still be made to the size and shape of the veneers before the bonding is set firm using a dental laser.

Depending on how many veneers are being fitted at any one time, it may be possible to completely transform the teeth in only one appointment. When set firm, any excess bonding is removed and the veneers polished and buffed to match the existing teeth creating a stunning new smile.
