Custom Dental Veneers Ensure That Your Smile Will Always Look Great

08 / 05 / 2015

Your teeth may seem like they can handle anything, however, they can be damaged if exposed to enough wear and tear. An experienced dentist like one from the London Bridge Dental Practice can help repair the different types of damage that affect your teeth. These methods can range from applying natural-looking dental veneers to dental implants.

Teeth Damage

There are different levels of damage to your teeth, the most severe of which can be irreparable. Major sports injuries that knock your tooth out, or cavities, are among the most common ways to suffer from this. The result is often the need to have the tooth extracted and replaced by a denture or a dental implant.

Minor issues with your teeth also pop up, such as discoloration. This can be the result of worn-down enamel; the layer that covers your teeth is also stained by smoking and drinking tea or soft drinks. Another issue to look out for is cracked teeth, which is more often than not a result of the tooth hitting against something hard. For small issues like these, minor dental operations like fillings or bonding are often used by dentists. The best option though is the use of dental veneers.

Dental Veneers

The available porcelain veneers on the market right now are thin custom-made shells that are placed over damaged or misaligned teeth to cover them up and protect them. The first step in getting them is having your teeth checked by a dentist, who will then check whether veneers are an option for you and how they should be applied to your teeth. This includes taking X-rays and making impressions of your mouth and teeth.

Once the planning is done, your teeth need to be prepared. This is done by having the dentist remove ½ millimeter of enamel from a tooth’s surface to create space for your veneer. After the trimming, an impression is made of your tooth to be sent to a dental lab to make the veneer. A temporary veneer is often placed over the prepared tooth for one to two weeks while the custom veneer is made. Finally, the veneer is bonded to your tooth after last-minute adjustments to ensure it is a good fit. Follow-up visits are done to see how well it fits and if anything needs to be adjusted.
